"Causes of Shap derailment needs to be examined" - Farron

3.00.00pm GMT Wed 5th Mar 2008

Local MP Tim Farron is calling on Network Rail to carefully examine the cause of the freight train derailments last weekend. The incident, which happened at Shap and caused part of the West Coast Mainline to be closed for the entire day, looks to have been caused by high winds, but Mr Farron remains concerned.

Tim Farron said:

"I am extremely worried that high winds, which occur frequently in the area, could have so easily derailed such a large freight train. I would urge Network Rail to look carefully at the causes of this incident, and do everything in their power to prevent a recurrence."
