MP demands consultation before damaging changes to out of hours doctors services

3.00.00pm GMT Wed 23rd Jan 2008

Local MP Tim Farron has expressed concern at the news that Baycall, an NHS-provided service providing out-of-hours GP medical care may be scrapped in favour of a private sector provider. Mr Farron fears that if Baycall is indeed scrapped, with some sources suggesting it may happen by April, it will be replaced by an inferior service provider, compromising quality.

The Baycall service is invaluable to patients and Mr Farron is keen for the public to be consulted before any major changes are made.

Tim Farron said:

"It is entirely inappropriate for the PCT to be making these decisions without consulting the public first. If it is the case that there are plans to scrap Baycall within months it would be terrible news.

"My main fear would be of going with a private sector provider who would be able to dictate inferior terms and conditions for staff and a level of service that would not be to the benefit of patients. Without full consultation, these concerns cannot be properly addressed."
