Farron congratulates Sustrans Connect2 scheme on £50m lottery award

Local MP Tim Farron has today welcomed the decision to award £50m of lottery funding to the Sustrans Connect2 scheme after it topped a national poll. The scheme will improve travel in 79 communities, including in South Lakeland, by providing funding for a national network of cycle-paths and walking routes in a bid to move Britain towards more sustainable transport methods.

Earlier this month Mr Farron tabled a parliamentary motion in support of Sustrans Connect2, and congratulated Cumbria County Council for committing to participate in the scheme. The lottery money will be provided over a five year period starting in 2008.

Tim Farron said:

"I am delighted that the Connect2 scheme has been awarded this money. There were a lot of worthy causes in the running for the lottery money, but I think Connect2 is the most far-sighted, and has the potential to have a real impact on these 79 communities."
