Council's Sustrans scheme gets parliamentary backing3.00.00pm GMT Mon 3rd Dec 2007 Local MP Tim Farron has tabled a parliamentary motion promoting the Sustrans Connect2 scheme which will see the creation of 79 new cycle and foot paths up and down the county. The motion also congratulates Cumbria County Council for participating in the scheme. In Cumbria, areas such as Coniston are set to benefit hugely from the new links that the scheme will create for cyclists and the benefit this will bring in terms of tourism and the environment. Sustrans is the leading sustainable transport charity in the UK working on practical and imaginative solutions to the transport challenges presented by the need to combat climate change. Mr Farron said: "The Connect2 scheme is a practical way for us to attract more green tourism to Cumbria, improve personal health and more importantly to help tackle climate change. I am delighted that Cumbria County Council has committed to this scheme. "If we all work together there is still a chance that we can reverse the effects of climate change, but time is of the essence. Schemes like the Connect2 example are ideal and will go a long way to helping create a zero-carbon Britain."
